Mission Statement:

The Mission of Castle Park Trojans Pop Warner Football and Cheer is to fundamentally develop young children in the participation of team sports. It will be our goal to reach young children the values of integrity and sportsmanship. Our organization will give every possible opportunity for young children regardless of race, creed or national origin to be successful in our program. We will create an environment that is parent friendly, children friendly and open to community involvement. We will strive to provide proper coaching and leadership based on the fundamental values of sportsmanship and fair play. We strive to set the examples for our young children and understand the key to our success is to lead by example. Administrative staff, supervisors and Head Coaches shall bear in mind that the development of exceptional athletic ability and the winning of games are secondary to the molding of good character which is of prime importance.

Brief History of Pop Warner

Pop Warner Football was founded in 1929 by Joseph J. Tomlin in Philadelphia as a four team league, and was the named the Junior Football Conference. However, the name of the league was changed in 1934 in honor of legendary collegiate coach and mentor, Glenn Scobie “Pop” Werner, who was a local Philadelphia coach of the Temple University Owls.

At the close of World War II, Philadelphia’s Pop Warner Conference numbered over 350 teams. Unlike the pre-war version, there was a shift away from older players to younger ones. The development of teams consisting of younger players attracted national attention, and in 1947, the first inter-city bowl game took place between a Philadelphia team and a New York team. Soon thereafter, leagues began springing up elsewhere. At the time of Pop Warner’s death in 1954, plans were underway to form a national organization, located in Philadelphia. Then, in 1959, the Pop Warner league was incorporated and re-named Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (“Pop Warner”).

Today, Pop Warner Football is played throughout the United States and in a growing number of foreign countries including Russia, Japan, Scotland and Germany. Almost seventy Pop Warner teams compete for the National Championship at the Pop Warner Super Bowl at Disney’s Wide World of Sports each December.
